Mueller Email Prayer Letter – February 2008

Volume 4, No. 3

LEV 26:6a I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid.

The time for peace has come to Kenya as the world watched the signing of a power-sharing agreement between President Kibaki and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Mr. Raila Odinga. In his speech, Kibaki asked Kenyans to rededicate themselves and to engage in “productive activities that contribute to the prosperity and well-being of our nation. We should also be a caring nation that reaches out to its neighbors and those who are disadvantaged in our society.”

We thank and praise God that this agreement has been signed and the people of Kenya have an opportunity to begin to live in peace again. It has truly been a tense time with lost lives and the destruction of goods and materials. Now is the time to rebuild and strengthen the communities with Christ’s love and Gospel message. All the LCMS missionaries are peacefully back in their homes in Kenya.

During our stay in Ethiopia, we had an opportunity to visit with partners around the world who are working with the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY). We attended the last day of the Committee of Mutual Christian Responsibility conference focusing on: Approaches in Wholistic Mission for the New Millennium. Rev. Claude Houge attended the week long conference as an observer to understand “how to” work more wholisticly with the EECMY. It was a blessing for LCMS to see this group and the work they all do together as partners in Christ. We also visited with the National leadership of the largest Lutheran church in the world. Rev. Paulus Shune, EECMY General Secretary is a great partner and missional leader.

More travels in February brought us to Tanzania where we met with the East of Lake Victoria Diocese (ELVD) leadership to discuss church partnership and what that means with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). It was also the first time visiting since the death of Bishop Nehemiah Bomani. We spent time with his wife to express our sympathy and pray with her. We also went to the Kiloleni church ravaged by a Tornado on January 11, 2007 which Joy saw a few days afterwards. She met with the project manager and talked about an emergency grant to help restore the church and some 14 community members’ homes. A year later the church roof and entrance is repaired and members in the community are back in their homes. Widow Mrs. Debora Justine was all smiles and hugs. Her entire home was destroyed by the tornado. Today she and her children are in a modest home built by the community with materials supplied by LCMS World Relief. To those of you who have donated financially or offered prayers, we say thank-you!

Prayers:

1.        Praise God for the political agreement reached in Kenya.

2.       Praise God for our safe travels in E. Africa during this time.

3.       Praise God for the many people who are supporting the displaced people and the Lutheran Church in Kenya.

4.       Pray for our personal support, our constant travel in planes, and our work forming relationships with the National Churches.
