Of all the gifts for which we thank God, above all is the gift of Himself to us, His erring but redeemed children!  “Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” (Psalm 73:25).

Our purpose is to reach out to families and individuals of all backgrounds and bring them into healing and transforming relationships with the Lord Jesus and with others in His Church through the sharing of God’s Word and Sacraments.

INSTALLATION SERVICE.  The members of Jehovah El Buen Pastor Lutheran Church invite our congregation members to the installation service for Dr. Eric Moeller, as their pastor, TODAY, Sunday, August 5, at 3:00 PM. He and his wife, Irma, have served as missionaries with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in Panama. Reception will follow in the church’s fellowship hall.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER.  Jesus said, “Watch out!  Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15).  In contrast to Jesus’ warning, the world tells us that greed is good.  Our society makes every effort to entice us to live a materialistic lifestyle.  Costly and manipulative advertising bombards us daily for the purpose of creating a desire for more and more things.  We are told that we need one luxury after another.  Only with the help of the Holy Spirit, will we not fall prey to the pulls of the world.  God calls us to be in the world but not of the world.  As John wrote, “Do not love the world or anything in the world” (1 John 2:15).  Through faith, we know that “the world and its desires pass away,” but those who follow the Lord will live forever. (1 John 2:17).

AUGUST NEWSLETTER ITEMS:

As the Newsletter is very cumbersome to duplicate online, a few important items from the most recent issue are included here.  We will endeavor to keep them up to date.

PASTOR JOHNSON’S MONTHLY LETTER:

From the DCE Intern

And they took hold of [the Apostle Paul] and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.”  —Acts 17:19-20

Paul’s preaching in the midst of the Areopagus (an area historians call “Mars Hill”) is not what we might call typical preaching. It was an interactive presentation of God’s Word. Paul was free to talk about their idols—especially “the monument to an unknown God” and use it as a segue into the Gospel.

Paul starts with creation and builds to the resurrection of Jesus. The crowd is free to interact with Paul. They are free to call his teachings strange. They are free to mock him. But through it all, some believe the Gospel and join Christ’s Church (v. 34).

We bear the name of St. Paul. Wouldn’t it be great to have a similar forum for our community? Wouldn’t it be awesome to see God’s Word go out to a culture full of false idols? Doesn’t our culture need a place where they can question, interact, and even mock the foolishness of the Gospel? And it is OK! “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men” (1 Cor. 1:25).

Our DCE, Chelci, some lay leaders, our youth, and myself hope to provide such a forum for our community. Our target is not just the youth in our community but anyone who might hunger for a place to interact with the Gospel. We have already met to plan a weekly gathering which we will call “Mars Hill.”

Please take a few minutes and read this text. And then pray that God would bring the same boldness, courage, and opportunities to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Many people may not come through the front door of our worship services. But they may come in through the back door—a place where they are free to doubt, investigate, and come freely to Christ!

Yours in Christ,
