Of all the gifts for which we thank God, above all is the gift of Himself to us, His erring but redeemed children!  Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” (Psalm 73:25).

Our purpose is to reach out to families and individuals of all backgrounds and bring them into healing and transforming relationships with the Lord Jesus and with others in His Church through the sharing of God’s Word and Sacraments.

FUN FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR!

As the dreaded school year approaches, we’d like to offer some fun, games, and Jesus celebrations to the lives of our youth!  So, for those of you in Junior or Senior high, we will continue our Bible studies on Thursday nights from 7-9pm here at church.  We do fun activities, have thought-provoking discussions, and if I’m not too crabby, play ultimate Frisbee afterwards!  So, junior high and high school students, feel free to join us at any time!  For those students entering 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, starting September 4th, we will have a blast on Tuesday nights from 5:30-7:00 PM here at church.  Some of our high school students who think you guys are grand will be there to play games and have fun with you and hang out with Jesus with you, and it will be great.  So, there’s the heads up, and see you soon!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CARE CORPS/PROVISO PANTRY.  Start checking your pantry for supplies that you have run low on and make a list to take to your local Jewel store on August 27-29.  A certificate will be in next week’s Chimes so that you can turn it in when you shop with a percentage of your bill going to support the Proviso Pantry.  Thank you for your support for the Pantry!

ATTENTION 4-6th GRADERS!  The new Bible study/fun night for 4-6th Graders, called 5th Street is beginning in 2 weeks!!!  Starting Tuesday, September 4th, we will have 5th Street just for preteen-aged youth here at church from 5:30-7:00pm!  Mark your calendars and prepare yourselves for a great time!

STEWARDSHIP CORNER.  Love is the fundamental motive for Christian stewardship.  Our giving may be systematic, proportionate, and generous, but if not motivated by love it is not Christian giving.  Paul wrote, “If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3).  The Pharisees gave large gifts, yet their gifts were not acceptable to the Lord.  Jesus sums up all the Law, which includes stewardship, as love to God and one’s neighbor.  The perfect relationship that should exist between us as stewards and God is expressed in the word “love.”  It also expresses the relationship that should exist between the Christian steward and his neighbors.

INVITATION!  The first Painting Party was a big success!  We don’t want you to feel left out so YOU ARE INVITED to the SECOND PAINTING PARTY scheduled for Saturday, September 8th, from 9 AM till ??  Come, have a good time, enjoy fellowship.  Lunch will be provided.

If you have a favorite brush/roller, etc. please feel free to bring it along!

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER ITEMS:

As the Newsletter is very cumbersome to duplicate online, a few important items from the most recent issue are included here.  We will endeavor to keep them up to date.

PASTOR JOHNSON’S MONTHLY LETTER:

From the DCE Intern

Dear St. Paul,

The past month we have spent much of our time preparing for the LCMS National Youth Gathering and we have just returned.  Dee Williams did an outstanding job of service for our youth in putting together that incredible project, and it was all worth it.  Aside from one speaker at 8am that put the man behind us to sleep (and some of us too, were the truth to be told!), the speakers were great, the activities were awesome, and the worship was invigorating!  It would be impossible to describe to you the experience in this simple newsletter, but I’ll try a little.  It would also be impossible to tell you about it from the students’ perspectives so I’ll have some of them write a little bit and spread it out over the next few newsletters.

Some of the highlights of the gathering were the service event, the Jesus painter, and the worship.  The first morning we were there, we were assigned service projects to do either around the convention center or around Orlando.  Our service project was almost an hour away and over an hour back (our bus driver got lost!) in a state park in Southern Florida.  We were to spend hours pulling exotic weeds that were strangling the growth of the native plants.  It was hot, humid, and uncomfortable, but our kids rose to the challenge and served in the Orlando sun for hours.  I was proud of them.

The Jesus Painter was a man who was at the previous Youth Gathering. His performances are powerful and we waited in the longest line ever to get seats to see him!  He paints to music, often beginning with a dark scene such as the words “All My Sin” or an image of a chasm between two figures.  These scenes then, he begins to shape and reshape with paint until, in less than twenty minutes, an image of Christ appears instead of the initial disquieting scene.  Christ is all in all, takes all our sin, and gives us life.  The Jesus Painter does an incredible job of communicating that, and we all loved it.

The worship mass events in the evenings were personally very powerful for me.  Over 25 thousand students stood together praising Jesus, and the effect was a deafening noise and a growing excitement and lots of smiles and laughter!  They had music, skits, dancing, dramas, preaching, interactive contests, and more music!  It was outstanding; my favorite part of the day.  Well, that is not entirely true.   On a few of the nights, we got to have some small group time just with our students after the worship time, and those times were really great.  It is wonderful to hear what they think and how they are learning.  J  In future newsletters and bulletins, they will write a few of their thoughts.  Thank you, St. Paul, for sending your students to this experience.<
