Of all the gifts for which we thank God, above all is the gift of Himself to us, His erring but redeemed children!  Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” (Psalm 73:25).

Our purpose is to reach out to families and individuals of all backgrounds and bring them into healing and transforming relationships with the Lord Jesus and with others in His Church through the sharing of God’s Word and Sacraments.

A BIG THANK-YOU to the many people who keep up our lawn and grounds.  Some of those green thumbs types are Vern B., Charles C., Henry L., Barb & Mark K., Robert W., Angela Z., Carol Z., and the Secret Gardeners whose names we missed…..It seems that we have some secret “waterers taking care of the plants in the sanctuary, please let the church office know if you are that “secret waterer or are interested in doing so.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER.  Love is the fundamental motive for Christian stewardship.  Our giving may be systematic, proportionate, and generous, but if not motivated by love it is not Christian giving.  Paul wrote, “If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3).  The Pharisees gave large gifts, yet their gifts were not acceptable to the Lord.  Jesus sums up all the Law, which includes stewardship, as love to God and one’s neighbor.  The perfect relationship that should exist between us as stewards and God is expressed in the word “love.”  It also expresses the relationship that should exist between the Christian steward and his neighbors.

·         Where will you be when the lights go on? Friday, September 14, the Walther Lutheran Broncos will face off against the Rockford Christian Life Eagles as they do every season.  This year they will do it under the lights on a Friday night.  Football teams all over America do this on Friday nights, but in the Private School League the gridiron matches traditionally take place on Saturday morning and afternoon.  So break tradition and enjoy this once-a-year event:  Friday Night Football under the lights.  The Frosh/Soph game kicks off at 5:00 PM and Varsity gets under way at 7:30 PM.  There will be special entertainment and activities between games and the grills will be going as the Boosters serve up Bronco brats, burgers and other favorites.  It’s all happening at Walther Lutheran H.S. Fran Fanelli Jr. Memorial Football Field right across from the school.  Where will you be when the lights go on?  Hopefully, at Walther, cheering on the Broncos!  Call 708/344-0404 if you need more information, or visit Walther.com.

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER ITEMS:

As the Newsletter is very cumbersome to duplicate online, a few important items from the most recent issue are included here.  We will endeavor to keep them up to date.

PASTOR JOHNSON’S MONTHLY LETTER:

From the DCE Intern

Dear St. Paul,

The past month we have spent much of our time preparing for the LCMS National Youth Gathering and we have just returned.  Dee Williams did an outstanding job of service for our youth in putting together that incredible project, and it was all worth it.  Aside from one speaker at 8am that put the man behind us to sleep (and some of us too, were the truth to be told!), the speakers were great, the activities were awesome, and the worship was invigorating!  It would be impossible to describe to you the experience in this simple newsletter, but I’ll try a little.  It would also be impossible to tell you about it from the students’ perspectives so I’ll have some of them write a little bit and spread it out over the next few newsletters.

Some of the highlights of the gathering were the service event, the Jesus painter, and the worship.  The first morning we were there, we were assigned service projects to do either around the convention center or around Orlando.  Our service project was almost an hour away and over an hour back (our bus driver got lost!) in a state park in Southern Florida.  We were to spend hours pulling exotic weeds that were strangling the growth of the native plants.  It was hot, humid, and uncomfortable, but our kids rose to the challenge and served in the Orlando sun for hours.  I was proud of them.

The Jesus Painter was a man who was at the previous Youth Gathering. His performances are powerful and we waited in the longest line ever to get seats to see him!  He paints to music, often beginning with a dark scene such as the words “All My Sin” or an image of a chasm between two figures.  These scenes then, he begins to shape and reshape with paint until, in less than twenty minutes, an image of Christ appears instead of the initial disquieting scene.  Christ is all in all, takes all our sin, and gives us life.  The Jesus Painter does an incredible job of communicating that, and we all loved it.

The worship mass events in the evenings were personally ver
