Of all the gifts for which we thank God, above all is the gift of Himself to us, His erring but redeemed children!  Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” (Psalm 73:25).

Our purpose is to reach out to families and individuals of all backgrounds and bring them into healing and transforming relationships with the Lord Jesus and with others in His Church through the sharing of God’s Word and Sacraments.

ST. PAUL SCHOOL NEWS this week

A GIFT FOR MOST…people might come wrapped in birthday or Christmas paper.  For a child, it might contain a toy (without the lead paint), a video game, or perhaps a book.  For an adult, it could contain a new shirt, a blouse, a tie, or a scarf.  (Books are great for adults, too.)  However, in parts of the third world, these types of gifts would mean little or nothing.  In many African countries, the greatest gift a person could receive is one that doesn’t wear out or go out of style.  A cow or a pig or a chicken would be most valued as a gift, for this gift provides an ongoing lively hood for the family.  In last week’s chapel service, Mr. John Lewis, from Barnyard Buddies, shared with the children the importance animals play in the lives of these people.  Through the first quarter’s chapel offering, the children will be helping a missionary provide a “barnyard buddy” for a needy family and in doing so, sharing the good news of the Gospel.  This week’s chapel will be presented by Doug Grebasch.

MEET MR. WICKBOLDT… My first name is Joel and I was born and raised here in Chicago on the Northwest side of the city.  I am married to my best friend, Ingrid, and we have a two-year-old daughter, Eva (pronounced EH-VA).  I attended a Lutheran grade school, Messiah, where my parents were my fifth and sixth grade teachers!  I had the opportunity to go to Luther North High School (a rival of Walther), and participate in Cross-country and Track.  I remember enjoying my art and religion classes at Luther.  Mr. Harrison and Ms. Galek were inspiring teachers to me while at Luther.  I decided that when I graduated from high school, I would attend Concordia University in River Forest.  I started taking education classes and obtained my degree in elementary education.  Although there was increased competition and the distances were further, I continued to participate in Cross-country and Track.  One of my art teachers helped me to learn to teach art to children.  I still use his book to this day.  I began teaching at St. John’s Lutheran School in Elgin and then had the opportunity to teach at St. JohnForest Park.  I have also worked at Borders, helping people to find good books to read and good music to listen to.  Now I’m here at St. Paul, teaching 4th grade.  In my free time, I enjoy watching baseball (Go Cubs!), listening to local (Chicagoland) music, watching movies, and just spending time with my family.”

TOO HOTNo, we’re not talking about either the Cubs or the Sox, but the school.  With temperatures hitting 90 degrees and classroom temperatures reaching the same level, an early (1:00) dismissal took place this past Wednesday.  Let’s hope that the weather cools down a little.

UP AND RUNNING…Practice has begun for St. Paul’s cross-country team.  This sport is open to students in 4th through 8th grades.  Coached by Kristin Ulrich, our 6th grade teacher, and Bethany Vasilie, our 2nd grade teacher, the children are working hard and long in anticipation of the Walther Cross-country Meet to be held on Monday, September 24th, at Thatcher Woods.

SPEAKING ABOUT SPORTS…The volleyball team, invol
