Of all the gifts for which we thank God, above all is the gift of Himself to us, His erring but redeemed children!  Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” (Psalm 73:25).

Our purpose is to reach out to families and individuals of all backgrounds and bring them into healing and transforming relationships with the Lord Jesus and with others in His Church through the sharing of God’s Word and Sacraments.

CHRISMONS are Christian symbols made into ornaments.  A group of St. Paul ladies are making them to use on our church Christmas tree beginning this year.  They are being made from quality pearls and gold beads.  Because they need to be large for our large tree the cost is approximately $10-$15 per ornament. There is no budget for these, so gifts to the Chrismon Fund would be much appreciated.  The church office is receiving your contributions--and with your help we will have a truly beautiful and meaningful tree this year!

THE LUTHERAN HOME will present their next monthly Lunch & Learn series for older adults entitled “Living Whole – Living Well” on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of St. John on the LHS campus.  Please join us as MaryJo Zeller from GeroSolutions, presents “Moving a Lifetime”.  A complimentary lunch will be served immediately following the presentation. This event is free and open to the public. To register, please contact Linda Stammer at 847-368-7403 or email her at lstammer@lutheranlifecommunities.org no later than April7, 2008. Complimentary valet service will be provided.  Mark your calendars for the 2nd Thursday of each month for the LHS “Living  Well – Living Whole” presentations. Seating may be limited.

FROM PASTOR JOHNSON.  “If you are in the hospital or are in need of pastoral care, please notify Maria in the church office.  If it is an emergency, please call my mobile phone (in printed copy of chimes).  Please don’t hesitate to call me at any hour if it is important; I keep the phone with me at all times.  If the matter is important enough to think about calling a pastor, by all means call me.  Please do not think you will disturb me or I will think the matter unimportant.  Thanks!”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SUNDAY SCHOOL.  On the first Easter, Jesus reveals to Mary Magdalene and to His disciples that He is alive (John 20:1–18). In Sunday School today the children learned how Jesus comes to us in His Word, so that the Spirit can give us faith to believe in Christ’s resurrection and comfort us when we mourn the death of loved ones. Talk with your children about how Christ has reconciled us to God and thus gives us eternal life. Review the third article of the Apostles’ Creed and Luther’s Explanation to it as you talk about how the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER.  Jesus said, “So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” (Luke 16:11).  Jesus is telling us that, if we can be trusted with our stewardship of the material things that He entrusts to us, then He will trust us to be stewards over things of highest value which relate to the eternal.  The way that we handle our material possessions is a good test of the way that we would handle responsibilities relating to God’s kingdom.  In order to be “trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,” we need to recognize our privilege and responsibility to use our material blessings with a kingdom focus.

BATHROOM TISSUE & DIAPER COLLECTION. The Care Corps Ministry supports the Proviso Food Pantry with financial aid as well as through the collection of needed commodities.  On April 12-13 and April 19-20 the corps is sponsoring a collection of bathroom tissue and a new item very much in need:  Disposable Diapers.  These items cannot be purchased with food stamps.  All sizes of diapers are needed, especially sizes 4 – 6/  Cash donations will also be accepted.  We encourage your support.  Containers will be placed at all entrances to the church where you can deposit your donations.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY BANDCONCERT.  The Music Department of Concordia University, 7400 Augusta St. in River Forest, presents University Band Spring Concert conducted by Dr. Richard Fischer, on Friday night, April 4, at 8:00 PM in the Chapel of Our Lord.  Featuring Rhapsody in Blue (Johanna Johnson will be playing with the Band).  Admission is free.  Free parking.

CONSECRATION SUNDAY IS COMING!  Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes.

Our congregation’s Board of Stewardship has selected the New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year.

New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?”

During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world.

Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending worship on Consecration Sunday or the Saturday service the day before. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.

We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During Saturday evening and Sunday morning worship our guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.

We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and members of the Board of Directors. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone t
