Of all the gifts for which we thank God, above all is the gift of Himself to us, His erring but redeemed children!  Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire besides you” (Psalm 73:25).

Our purpose is to reach out to families and individuals of all backgrounds and bring them into healing and transforming relationships with the Lord Jesus and with others in His Church through the sharing of God’s Word and Sacraments.

THE SUMMER MEN’S CHORUS will again rehearse this coming Thursday at 7:30 pm.  This new musical venture will enhance one or two of our upcoming Sunday services with hymns arranged in Barbershop and Maennerchor styles.  If you are interested in singing with us, please speak with Jeff Kiel after the service today.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER.  Our decisions about giving are to be deliberate, thoughtful, prayerful decisions.  What begins in our hearts, fills our minds, and flows out through our hands.  Giving is a personal responsibility.  The Apostle Paul wrote, “On the first day of each week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money . . .” (1 Corinthians 16:2).  Paul doesn’t say that some of us should give; the reference is clear that each of us is to give.  In this same Bible verse, Paul also expresses are need to be giving on a regular basis.  Giving should be done “on the first day of each week.”

SENIOR HEALTH FAIR.  Victory Centre of River Woods will sponsor a Senior Health Fair next Wednesday, July 23rd, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  Will offer  a Voters Registration Booth, Health Screenings (i.e. Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Glucose, Bone Density, Prostate), Learn about Supportive Living, Home Health and Senior Services.  Victory Centre is located at 1800 River Woods Drive in Melrose Park.  Telephone 708-547-5800.

The following note came from Nina B. & Family to the congregation: Dear St. Paul Family, Thank you very much for praying for my mother and my family. It has been a very difficult time and I know that it has been your prayers that have sustained us. I still have my moments of sensing a great loss, but know  that this too will pass. Thank you for your prayers, words, thoughts, and cards. Nina and family.”

FROM PASTOR JOHNSON.  “If you are in the hospital or are in need of pastoral care, please notify Maria in the church office.  If it is an emergency, please call my mobile phone (in printed copy of chimes).  Please don’t hesitate to call me at any hour if it is important; I keep the phone with me at all times.  If the matter is important enough to think about calling a pastor, by all means call me.  Please do not think you will disturb me or I will think the matter unimportant.  Thanks!”

MISSION TO SERVE Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  The NID LWML Short Term Mission Committee has been granted two opportunities through Lutheran Church Charity for our district to help, support, and encourage the families suffering from the flooded Mississippi in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Saturday July 26th through Thursday July 31 is the first trip. Please contact Jan Gerzevske at 630-294-5014 or jg30w017@hotmail.com  for more details.  Friday, August 15th through Wednesday August 20th is the second trip.  Please contact Carol Fuys at 630-637-0550 or cfuys14@comcast.net for details.

“IT’S RAINING CATS AND DOGS!”    Due to this summer’s flooding, this old expression has taken on new truth.  Chicago area animal shelters are full this year because many have taken in abandoned animals from Iowa and Missouri.  This means that there is much less shelter space available for the current crop of kittens and puppies born right here in our own neighborhoods.

Like human children, these animals need the love and shelter of a family, and as a part of God’s creation, they need responsible care.   Think about adding a rescued animal to your family this summer.  The need is great, but so are the rewards of pet ownership. Contact one of the many shelters and animal control facilities in the Chicago area to find out about their fees and policies.  Two that serve our immediate area are:

Melrose Park Animal Hospital: 708-345-7640 kittens and dogs available.

CatNap, Lagrange Park: 708- 352-3914 Cats, kittens and rabbits available.
